Things You Never Knew About .... Lightening

#1. Lightening is formed by an electrical charge in the atmosphere. The movement of rain and ice inside a thunder cloud create electrical charges. The electrons at the top of the cloud and bottom are opposites so a charge is created.

#2. Lightening is a form of static electricity. This means there is a build up of electrons staying in one place until they jump to another place with no circuit required. Printers and Toners also use static energy, charging the ink and the toner.

#3. Contrary to the myth lightning never strikes twice, lightening can strike in the same place again if enough charge remains from the first bolt.

#4. The CN Tower, Toronto, Canada gets struck by lightening about 75 times a year. So lightening really does strike the same place twice.

#5.During lightening stay away from windows. This is because a lightening bolt would smash the glass before it would travel through the glass.

#6. A car is safe during a lightening storm as it does not conduct the bolt, it goes around the vehicle. It is not safe because it has rubber tyres!

#7. A single lightening strike can power a 100 watt light bulb for 90 days.
